Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Australia but avoided a criminal conviction.
Kyrgios admitted he was guilty in a Canberra court after his lawyers failed to have the charge dismissed on mental health grounds.
The court heard that the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up had pushed his former girlfriend Chiara Passari to the ground after she stopped his car from driving away while they were arguing on 10 January 2021.
Passari reported the incident to the Police the next month but did not make a formal complaint until December 2021 after she broke up with the Wimbledon finalist.
Magistrate Beth Campbell did not record a conviction against the 27-year-old, describing the common assault as "a single act of stupidity or frustration."
When sentencing Kyrgios, Magistrate Campbell said he had been "a young man trying to extricate himself from a heightened emotional situation."
"You acted in the heat of the moment," she said.
"I am dealing with you in the same way I would deal with any young man in this court.
"You are a young man who happens to hit a tennis ball particularly well."
She also told Kyrgios that references from family showed he had a lot of "love and support" around him.
Kyrgios had a career setback last month when he withdrew from the Australian Open to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove the cyst growing in his lateral meniscus.
