Niger: NEMA reveals details of building collapse in Chanchag

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has revealed details of the building collapse that occurred on Friday at the Sabon Garin area in Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State.

The agency in a statement on Saturday revealed that the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Friday in the area which is one of the busiest commercial areas of the state.

The statement added that the building was initially a residential building and was later illegally converted into a warehouse.

Explaining the cause of the collapse, the agency said the building which was a storey building collapsed due to overloading with beverages.

It added that while no life was lost, nine people have been rescued with two having critical injuries and seven others unhurt, adding that rescue operation was ongoing.

The statement partly reads: "NEMA, Minna Operations Office responded to a building collapse incident that occurred on 17th May 2024 at Sabon Gari Area, Chanchaga LGA, Niger State.

"The incident occurred at about 3:30 pm on Friday at Sabon Gari in one of the busiest commercial areas within the state capital. It was initially a residential building and was illegally converted to a one-story building Warehouse. The warehouse became overloaded with beverages and collapsed.

"Nine people were rescued with two critically injured and taken to the hospital while seven were unhurt. No loss of life was recorded as at the time of writing this report but Rescue Operation is still ongoing.

"All relevant stakeholders are present at the scene of the incident. NEMA Search and Rescue Team, NSEMA, NPF, FFS, NSCDC, DSS, Urban Development Board, NISEPA, Vigilante Group, Press amongst others."
