Niger police nab two suspects over killing of trader

The Niger State Police Command has detained two people in connection with the assassination of a businessman in Minna on April 18.

DSP Wasiu Abiodun, the command's spokesperson, told reporters in Minna on Wednesday that hoodlums killed the trader at 10 p.m. on that tragic day.

He stated that an inquiry was underway to determine the facts of the occurrence and guarantee rigorous prosecution.

Abiodun also stated that a commercial motorcyclist had been slain in Minna and promised that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

A resident in the area where the rider was killed stated that his assailants grabbed his motorbike after the event.

He stated that the dead was survived by a wife, seven children, and other relatives.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command has tragically confirmed the deaths of five children who accidentally locked themselves inside an abandoned vehicle in Gurara Albishir, a suburb of Minna, the state capital.

The bodies of the children, aged between five and thirteen, were discovered inside the abandoned car.

According to reports, the parents of the children had been searching for them since 11 a.m. until their bodies were found around 4 p.m.

An eyewitness from the area described the incident as a shock, noting that the children got locked inside the car while playing, and nobody knew they were there for several hours.

The deceased children included four girls and a boy, with three of them from one family and the remaining two from different families.

The vehicle had reportedly been abandoned by its owner for about two years.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, stating that it was reported at Kpakungu Division.

He mentioned that the children were found suffocated inside a Honda Civic with registration number GO 778 ABC at Albishiri area in Minna.

“They were found to have suffocated in the vehicle, while their bodies were later removed by the various parents, as Police visited the scene”, he said.
