Nigeria 1-1 Equatorial Guinea: Three Significant Points from AFCON draw

Nigeria 1-1 Equatorial Guinea: Three Significant Points from

Nigeria opened their campaign at the AFCON showpiece with a 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea as it finished with both sides sharing the spoils in the contest.

The Equatorial Guinea side took the lead thanks to a goal from Ivan Salvador in the 38th minutes of the contest. But Nigeria responded immediately with a goal from Victor Osimhen in exemplary fashion.

As we saw in the match, both teams had the chances to bury the game against each other but it finished 1-1 in the end. Following the 1-1 draw in the match, allnews.ng relates three significant points from the tie.

Nigeria lack team urgency

Nigeria’s Super Eagles need urgency in their game if they are to get the better of their opposition as the case may be in this AFCON competition.

Althrough the match there were unnecessary delay and slowing down of the match which was really uncalled for.

Nigeria never led in this match so what was the time wasting for. The team is under some form of manipulation as to why they appear not eager to attack the opponent at some point in the game.

Good substitutions from Jose Peseiro

One positive to note in the game was the good substitutions Nigeria boss Jose Peseiro made in the match.

He substituted Moses Simon and Alhassan Yusuf and replacing them with Samuel Chukwueze and Joe Aribo.

That was commendable along with substituting Ola Aina for Bright Samuel-Osayi.

The only issue is that he should have taken off Alex Iwobi earlier to bring in a striker (Paul Onuachu) as Nigeria went in search of an elusive goal in the game.

Same Creativity Issue

For me I simply can’t understand why the Super Eagles are struggling in the midfield for years. I am amazed truly.

The players in that position seems to be jilt any on the ball. Nobody wants to call for the ball or take show responsibility.

This has led the team to struggle to advance in the final third. The team has been left to play long ball from the back which has not been left active.

  1. dynamism in the middle of the park from the Nigerian side. And this has affected the speed of the attack and transition play. While it has also distorted the shape of the defence line.
