Nigerian Army Lectures Personnel On PTSD

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya has inaugurated the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) awareness lecture for personnel of the 8 Division Nigeria Army, Sokoto.

The COAS who was represented by General Office Commending, 8 Division Nigeria Army, Major General Godwin Mutkut said the lecture was organised following the myriad of security threats in the country.

“This have necessitated the deployment of troops alongside other security agencies in various theatres to contain the threats.

“So, these operations have exerted significant pressure on troops with the resultant effect of high casualty rates, injuries, damage to equipment and accumulated stress as well as other mental health-related disorders such as PTSD,” he said.

The COAS commended the effort of the department of Srmy Transformation and Innovation for orgnising the programme.

“This all important sensitisation is coming at a good time and will provide the personnel a unique opportunity to understanding issues related to PTSD that will guide your management of the syndrome.

“Recently, the Division experienced a sad incident where a soldier deployed at Forward Operations Base, Rabah, killed his colleagues and shot himself.

“While the outcome of the board of inquiry is been awaited, it is necessary to reiterate that you closely monitor the actions of your colleagues, especially during the conduct of operations.

“This sad event would have been avoided if you have reported the syndrome.

“You are enjoined to report any observed anomaly in the behaviour of your comrades in order to forestall future occurrence,” he said.

Yahaya expressed confidence that the participants would benefit immensely from the interaction following the calibre of distinguished and experienced resource persons present at the event.
