Nigerian Army opens computer lab for girls school in Kano

Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), inaugurated a new 25-seat capacity computer laboratory for the Government Girls Secondary School Charanchi in Bichi Local Government Area, Kano State.

"The project is part of efforts to encourage learning of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) at the secondary school level," Lagbaja said at the inaugurating ceremony on Saturday.

He explained that his office initiated the Special Intervention Projects to support communities of serving senior officers of the Nigerian Army, who through dedication to duty and service to the nation rose to the enviable rank of Maj.-Gen.

Maj.-Gen Nosakhare Ugbo, Chief of Civil Military Affairs, who represented Lagbaja, said the project "would complement existing infrastructure, promote and strengthen Civil-Military Cooperation in such benefiting communities."

"This project will further serve as an avenue to associate with communities," he added.

The COAS congratulated Maj.-Gen. Umar Bichi-Abubakar, the Coordinator, Peace Support Operations, Ministry of Defence, for the project's timely completion and quality.

Bichi-Abubakar while speaking earlier, expressed his appreciation to the COAS “for the project, funding it, giving back to Nigerians and putting smiles on the faces of the beneficiaries."

He revealed that the center would cater to the school's 1,380 female students.

"The computer knowledge they would acquire would help them even in their matrimonial homes," he said.

Bichi-Abubakar emphasized that the center would further strengthen civil military relations.

He called on the community residents to make best use of the facility.

The school's Principal, Safiya Mahe, commended the military for setting such an important project adding that it would further strengthen girl-child education in the area.
