Nigerian Gets Death Sentence In Vietnam Over Drug Traffickin

A 45-year-old Nigerian Ekwegbalu James Nzube has been sentenced to death in Vietnam for trafficking almost four kilograms of methamphetamine from Cambodia.

The sentencing was carried out on March 2, 2021, by a court in the southern Tay Ninh Province. Nzube revealed that he got acquainted with another Nigerian in China in 2014 and was hired by that one to transport drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam.

Nzube was paid $2,000 for the job. He came to Ho Minh City before transporting himself to Cambodia to fetch the drugs.

While crossing the border illegally to Vietnam, he was caught by guards at the border in Tay Ninh province. Among the things found in his rucksack were four plastic bags with nearly four kilograms of meth.

Penalties for drug offences in Vietnam are severe. Under the Vietnamese penal code, someone caught in possession of even a small amount of heroin can be sentenced to death.

There are reportedly more than two dozen foreigners serving life sentences or facing the death penalty for drug trafficking offences.

Vietnamese authorities have announced increased security and investigative measures to fight drug trafficking.

In August 2016, three Nigerians were executed by firing squad in Indonesia for drug trafficking despite international protest.
