Ernest Shonekan ruled Nigeria during a brief stint as the Head of State of Nigeria between 26 August 1993 and 17 November 1993 after which he was ousted in a coup led by late General Sani Abacha.

On 17 November 1993, Shonekan was compelled to resign by his Minister of Defense, Sani Abacha. Abacha cited socio-political uncertainty under the Interim National Government as a reason for his resignation in his nationwide broadcast.
