NIS probes torn passport incident at Lagos airport

The Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, has launched a probe into the viral video showing the destruction of a Nigerian Standard Passport by a woman at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, in Lagos.

Allnews.ng recalls that the video which went viral over the weekend on social media platforms alleged that the passport belonged to her husband whom they have been quarreling with on the plane before their arrival.

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kenneth Udo disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, adding that the woman has been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, with passport number A11990869.

Udo added that the Comptroller General of Immigration, KN Nandap has directed that the woman be invited for further investigation.

The statement added that if the allegations against her are substantiated, it would constitute a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, as amended, with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.

The statement partly reads: "The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveler destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

"The individual involved has been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, holding passport number A11990869.

"In response to this incident, the Comptroller General of Immigration, KN Nandap, pcc, mmis, fsm, has directed that Mrs. Favour Igiebor be invited for further investigation.

"If the allegations are substantiated, her actions would constitute a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.

"The Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security, and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation's legal instruments."
