Nnamdi Kanu Appears In Court After Re-Arrest

The Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Tuesday, confirmed the re-arrest of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

According to Malami, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu was arrested on Sunday and brought to Nigeria.

The IPOB leader has however appeared before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja amidst tight security, at about 1:40 pm.

Kanu has levied war against the Nigerian government which by the provisions of the law is a crime against the state. Treason is a serious offence against the state and punishable by a death sentence.

According to the provisions of Section 37 (1) of the Criminal Code, any person conspiring with another either within or outside Nigeria to levy war against the state, with the intent to cause such levying of war as would be treason if committed by a citizen of Nigeria, is guilty of treason and liable to punishment of death.

According to the court, Kanu will be remanded in the custody till July 26 for his continuation of his trial.
