North Korea has fired a ballistic missile that appears to have landed in Japan’s economic exclusion zone.
Saturday’s move by North Korea comes ahead of upcoming US-South Korea table-top exercises in Washington next week.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said; “North Korea fires an unidentified ballistic missile into [the] East Sea."
The East Sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.
Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno also said North Korea had fired an ICBM-class ballistic missile.
He said the missile travelled an estimated 900 kilometres (560 miles), reaching a maximum altitude of 5,700 kilometres.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida too, said the missile appeared to have landed “within Japan’s EEZ (exclusive economic zone), west of Hokkaido.”
Japanese officials said there was no immediate reports of damage to ships or airplanes.
