Nigeria Professional Football League side, Rivers United, had its team bus seized at gunpoint after a 2-0 defeat to Heartland FC on Sunday in Okigwe, Imo State.
In a statement made available by the club’s media officer, Sammy Wejinya, the hoodlums responsible for the attack were led by a former player of the now-defunct Dolphins FC.
“One of the officials of Rivers United FC, Charles Ahuzi, was badly beaten during the unfortunate incident,” Weijinya said.
He noted that the incident happened at the Okigwe Stadium after Rivers had defeated home side Heartland FC 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, Imo State Police Command, Ikeokwu Orlando, has denied the attack, saying nothing of the sort happened in the state.
“Nothing like that happened in Okigwe on Sunday, except maybe on their way going back to Port Harcourt, because after the match, they left the stadium, there was no fracas, there was no problem and they left,” Orlando told The PUNCH on Monday.
“I don’t know at what point the incidence happened but they never reported to the police anywhere,” he added.
