NUC Urges Varsity Registrars On Strategic Planning For Globa

Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), has given the Registrars of Universities the responsibility of developing an effective strategic plan to modernize the country's institutions and make them competitive internationally.

Rasheed issued the challenge at the Federal University Lokoja's 73rd Business Meeting of the Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities.

The event's theme was "Repositioning the Administrative Machinery of the Nigerian University System for Global Competitiveness: The Role of Registrars as Key Drivers."

Director Professor I. A. Yakasai who represented the NUC Secretary said “In an era of limited resources, effective strategic planning is vital for universities to remain globally competitive.”

Rasheed listed inadequate teaching, learning, and research facilities, insufficient funds, a shortage of qualified teachers (including professors of high calibre), and strikes as some of the issues facing universities and impeding their development.

“Registrars can spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency by leveraging on technology and implementing robust information systems.

“They can streamline administrative processes, reduce bureaucracy, and promote a culture of excellence.

"Modernizing administrative procedures will not only improve the overall student experience but also attract and retain top-tier Faculty and Researchers, ” he said

The NUC Executive Secretary suggested that registrars might encourage student and staff mobility, collaborate with foreign schools, and implement credit transfer procedures thanks to their understanding of international standards and best practices.

“By nurturing an inclusive and diverse campus environment, Nigerian universities could attract international talents, foster cross-cultural understanding and contribute to the global knowledge economy.”

“You can serve as the voice of reason, highlighting the need for increased funding, improved governance structures, and enhanced regulatory frameworks," he added

Rasheed further advised that Registrars may work with government organizations, business stakeholders, and the academic community to support changes that will push Nigerian universities to the top of the world's higher education rankings.

He added that it was everyone's duty to reposition the Nigerian university system's administrative infrastructure for international competitiveness.

“If registrars embrace innovation, foster collaboration, and advocate for change, they can shape a future where Nigerian universities are recognised as centres of excellence on the global stage.

“But first, the system must empower our registrars, provide them with the necessary resources and support, and create an enabling environment for them to fulfil their potential.

“By doing so, we will not only strengthen our universities but also contribute to the development and progress of our nation,” he said.
