Ogun Police Arrest 66 For Criminal Offences

67 suspects have been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command for various offences of cultism, kidnapping, murder, ritual, robbery and fraud.

Cultism has the highest number of 55 suspects, all arrested in the last two weeks following the command's special focus on the recurrent clashes of diverse groups that claimed eight lives.

The state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, disclosed at a press briefing in Abeokuta on Thursday, April 28, 2022, that following a series of recent cult clashes in some parts of the state, he set up a special squad, with a mandate to fish out members of various violent cult groups wherever they are within the state. 

"The squad, which is being commanded by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations, swung into action and started clamping down on all known cultists in the state.

"Their operations, within the last two weeks, have yielded positive result as not less than 55 members of various cult groups have so far been apprehended.

"They were linked to several cult clashes across the state which left about 8 people dead." 

In a related development, nine suspected kidnappers, said to be terrorizing Abeokuta/Ayetoro Road, were also arrested by a combined team of policemen attached Sabo/Ilupeju Divisional Headquarters, men of the So-Safe Corps, local hunters, Amotekun Corps as well as OPC men. 

According to the CP,  two members of the syndicate, whose main role was to run errands and keep vigil on security agencies against swooping on the group were sighted at Rounder area of the metropolis and were arrested by the Sabo/Ilupeju Division of the police.

The successful burst resulted in the nabbing of seven other members of the gang on April 24 at their hideout in Abule Oba, off Ayetoro Road.
