Okada Ban: 140 Motorcycles Impounded, Passengers Arrested

The Lagos State Police Command has disclosed that it seized 140 motorcycles and arrested 16 passengers and riders following the enforcement of the ban on Okada riders in the state.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that 94 of the motorcycles were impounded by the police and the rest were seized by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency.

"There was over 90 per cent compliance, but some motorcyclists still came out and we arrested and charged them to a mobile court.

"Sixteen passengers and motorcyclists were arrested; the majority of the motorcyclists did not carry passengers and some of the motorcyclists abandoned their motorcycles after sighting policemen", Hundeyin said.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced the ban which took effect on June 1 after a sound engineer named David Imoh was killed in the Lekki axis of the state.

On Wednesday, June 1, most of the affected areas of the state complied with the directive, with places like Ojodu Berger bereft of the usual Okada riders.
