Ondo Government Orders Counselling Units For Pupils

The Ondo State Government has ordered the creation of counselling units for pupils in schools across the state.

This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Femi Agagu on Thursday, at the maiden conference and award ceremony of the Counselling Association of Nigeria, Ondo State Chapter, held at Adeyemi University, Ondo town, on Thursday.

The state government maintained that a counselling unit was one of the requirements for the approval of the establishment of private schools in Ondo State.

The theme of the conference was ‘Counselling and the challenges of 21st century Nigeria.’

Agugu, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Lola Amuda, said the government was zealous about enhancing counselling practice in the state.

“The state government has been sponsoring counsellors for programmes and conferences on a yearly basis.

Also, we have productively ensured that all public secondary schools in the state now have counselling units while one of the prerequisites for approval of private secondary schools is the availability of a functional counselling unit.

“Notwithstanding the government's efforts at improving counselling services in both public and private schools in the state, we are not ignorant of the fact that there are still teething  challenges bedevilling counselling practices in our schools.” Agugu said.

The  national chairman of the association, Dr. Joseph Oyadeyi, while speaking, said the programme aimed to bring counsellors across the country together and speak on the theme of the conference later.

“We will be able to have the recommendation that will mitigate challenges facing education and Nigeria as a whole,” Oyadeji said.

Dr. Michael Ogunboyode, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the programme maintained that counselling was useful in solving various challenges in Nigeria.
