One Dead, Many Injured In Indonesia's Volcanic Eruption

At least one person has been killed while others are battling various degrees of burns following the eruption of the Semeru volcano in Indonesia Saturday.

Videos shared by the country’s disaster mitigation agency showed people running in panic as towering smoke and ash covered the area. Some rode on a motorbike with the road covered with volcanic ash following the eruption.

Indah Masdar, the deputy chief of Lumajang district confirmed that one person has died and 41 have suffered burn injuries.

The Semeru volcano is a 3,676-metre volcano which is the highest in the country’s island. The volcano also erupted in January but caused no casualties.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes and volcano eruptions and has about 128 active volcanoes.
