One dead, several injured as chaos erupts during demolition

A violent confrontation in the Bukuru market area of Jos South Local Government, Plateau State, on Monday, resulted in the death of one person and injuries to several others.

Over ten vehicles and a microfinance bank building were set ablaze during the chaos.

The incident began when officials from the Jos Metropolitan Development Board arrived at Bukuru market to enforce an Executive Order by demolishing illegal structures erected along the roadside.

Their actions were part of a broader campaign to clear unauthorized constructions, particularly those disrupting the market vicinity.

Upon the officials' arrival, they were met with fierce resistance from local hoodlums.

These individuals, emerging from the surrounding neighbourhood, attacked the enforcement officers with stones and other dangerous weapons, leading to widespread disorder.

Amidst the turmoil, residents reported that a microfinance bank building was torched, and more than ten cars were burned.

Traders in the market, attempting to flee the violence, sustained various injuries.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attacks on the task force members and the traders, labeling the actions as disgraceful.

He expressed deep concern over the reckless conduct of the attackers, who not only inflicted harm but also looted shops and destroyed vehicles belonging to innocent market traders.

Mutfwang, in a statement by his Spokesperson, Gyang Bere, said the incident was entirely avoidable, questioning the motives of those who flouted Executive Order 003 and resorted to violence against law-abiding citizens.

He called on security agencies to swiftly apprehend all perpetrators and ensure that they face justice without delay.

The governor reiterated the state government’s unwavering resolve to deal with troublemakers.

Highlighting the broader purpose of Executive Order 003, Mutfwang clarified that its intent is to safeguard Jos from deteriorating into a slum and a haven for criminal activities.

Security personnel have been deployed to the troubled area to restore law and order.
