One-Hit-Wonders: Where Are Kas, Bigiano, Weird Mc, Others?

Nigeria is sure blessed with hitmakers who, have in the past, shaken the music industry before their sudden disappearance from the music scene.

Some music lovers even till date have those songs on their lips, but what went wrong with some of the artistes is what fans still wonder about.

Although some have opted for other means of livelihood, others are still in the industry,, struggling to be back in the spotlight, they once shared. 

Some have suddenly disappeared from the industry and practically off the radar.

Let’s take a look at some successful pop stars that have completely fallen from 'grace' in the music industry. 

AllNews takes a look at these artistes and their hit songs:

Tosin Martins

Inspirational singer, Tosin Martins, came into the limelight with his 2006 hit song, ‘Olomi.’ The song was heard in almost all wedding ceremonies. Live a lover that suddenly ghosted during a relationship, Martins walked out on his fans and fame. Leaving behind fond memories with his 'Olomi.'

But while speaking with Punch in an old interview, the “Olomi” crooner said he disappeared because “other music evolved and it just stopped being about that kind of sound. There is a Naija pop sound that is dominant and radio gives them a priority. I am not that kind of artiste. I can collaborate with them and bring that kind of sound into my genre but the reality is that it is not my kind of sound.”

Niyola

Sultry singer and only lady in the EME squad, Niyola, who has spanned over a decade in the industry, is best known for her song “Toh Bad” which was sure a hit. She began music as far back as when she partook in Starlet music competition in 2000. She started singing back up for Sound Sultan and Baba Dee.

Gabriel Afolayan

Known as G Fresh, this fantastic Nollywood actor dropped a hit track in 2012 dubbed “kokoro ife” which was accepted by many. Although he has released several songs after then, he has failed to grab the spotlight once again, as he did in 2012.  

Sunny Neji

“Oruka” was a hit in 2007 as it became a national anthem at every Nigerian wedding. Speaking on his disappearance from the music scene in a 2018 interview, the “Oruka” crooner said: “Some of my greatest songs did not get the kind of reaction I expected . Oruka and Mr Fantastic can be considered to be some of my successful songs. I am trying to reinvent a direction, I am thinking deeper now before I write songs. I am trying to redefine a more inspirational path before I write my songs. If you want to connect with people at that level, it has to do with more thinking."

Paul play

The Nigerian sensational singer, Paul Play became more popular after he dropped “Angel Of My Life” in 2006. But after a long disappearance, he reappeared with the remake of the hit song in which he initially featured Ruff, Rugged n Raw. For the remake, Paul features Runtown in the smashing tune. Paul probably needs another Angel in his life. 

Chuddy k

Delta State-born Ajegunle-bred singer, Chukwudi Ken Agali, better known as Chuddy K, who went through the hard knocks of ghetto life to carve a niche for himself in the Nigerian music dropped a hit “Gaga crazy“in 2011 and it was very much acceptable by music lovers.

Some years back, he released a new song titled Ekelebe and shot the video in South Africa. He also signed a contract with a South African record label, but the fame has up till date depreciated after he dropped “ Gaga”

Mc Galaxy

With few years in the Nigerian music industry, Innocent Udeme Udofot, popularly known as MC Galaxy is also a dancer. He was just a year old in the industry when he made an album. Where he had “Sekem”, which was another hit song that dropped alongside a dance routine. Since dropping the hit, MC Galaxy is yet to replicate the glory of the song that arguably catapulted him to more success.

Omawumi

The Delta-said indigene is an actress and singer/songwriter who incorporates elements of soul and R&B into her bright, funk-laden pop sound. Omawumi decided to indulge in her passion for singing by auditioning for the 2007 West African version of the TV talent show franchise Idols. Her powerful and arresting voice, along with her radiant personality, shone throughout the competition, and she was ultimately voted first runner-up. In 2012, she came through with "Bottom Belle" featuring Flavour Nabania.

D’prince

Afropop singer and songwriter, D’Prince born Charles Enebeli was a member of the defunct Mo’Hits music group which consisted of his older brother Don Jazzy, D’banj, Wande Coal and K Switch. Since the split of the group, D’prince has dropped several songs but the only one that appeared to have been a banger was “Take Banana.”

Soul E

His hit single “Soul E Baba Dey Here” was an extremely popular tune in 2006

Soul E had years back announced that he was leaving music for the gospel. He had revealed that a prophet, told him he would become a cripple should he fail to do God’s work. 

Cynthia Morgan

The dance-hall singer became more popular after dropping “Don’t break my heart” and "After a while."

However, she resurfaced again with the claims that she lost her career under Jude Okoye’s record label, Northside Entertainment.

According to the songstress who spoke during an Instagram live session, she also lost her name VEVO and Instagram account due to her contract with Jude

May D

In 2011. May D signed was signed to the P Square-owned Square Records and shot  the video for his smashing hit 'Ile Ijo' which was widely accepted. Over the past few years, May D went off radar without many of his fans being aware of his activities. Although he featured in so many songs. In August 2012, May D announced his split from Square Records and announced his own label, Confam Entertainment.

Kas

Afro-pop artiste cum evangelist, Kas Shobayo, popularly known as Kas Beats, came into limelight in 2011, after he released a banging single dubbed “Fimile” a widely accepted hit with solid beats.

To the surprise of many, Kas in the latter of 2017 became a pastor on the claims that six pastors told him so and received he an anointing from the Holy Spirit. In an old interview with Vanguard, he had said: “When I was 7-years old I made a covenant with God that if He can make me a popular musician, in return I will serve Him. God did his part and I became a popular musician but in return, I was running."

Bigiano

In 2008, one of the songs that rocked the entertainment world was “Shayo” that was the anthem on the lips of all music lovers. Owing to the success of the single, he named his album Shayo Master.

The album, which was released under T.Joe Records in 2010, contained minor hits such as Iwofa, True Story and One and Only.

Bigiano disappeared from the scene at a point, on the claims that: "I decided to take a little break to re-brand myself . When the fame of ‘Shayo’ came, I couldn’t handle it. I deliberately made the decision to go off the scene in 2011 to re-position my brand.”

A few years later, he returned with a new single, Tonight, but did not gain any traction.

Klever Jay

Also in 2008, Klever Jay’s Koni Koni Love was a massive hit in Nigeria and Africa at large.

He subsequently released “ Igboro ti daro” which also enjoyed massive plays.

Sadly, he has failed to produce any hit-banger ever since.

Jodie

“Kuchi Kuchi” by sonorous Jodie was released in 2010 and it sure achieved widespread popularity and impact. Two years later, the singer released her debut album African Woman, but ever since, she’s been quiet.

Weird MC

Although she came into the music scene since 1996, she never gained prominence until she released “Ijoya” in 2006. The song was a massive hit, unfortunately, not much has been heard of her for some years back.

D'ija

Mavin Records queen, Di’ja, released her biggest hit so far “Aww” in December 2014, shortly after she joined the record label. The song topped so many charts and it was also one of the top on YouTube as at 2015. However, she is yet to drop any song that will amass such accolades from her fans.

W4

Born Adewale Adepoju, he ventured into the music scene in 2005 after he released his debut album “Temperature”. Shortly after he dropped his hit single “ Wa gba control” which was a banger, he ventured into some other businesses which did not yield profit. In one of his interviews where he explained his disappearance, he said: “The career is still intact. Actually, after Kontrol my other single Foreign Dance came under a record label called Crystal Posh but along the line they ventured into other forms of businesses which derailed them from the entertainment industry”. 

Samklef

Unknown to many, Samklef owns popular song “ Molowo noni” linked to Wizkid. “Molowo noni” of course was acceptable but in spite of subsequent releases and features, Samklef is yet to receive much attention.

Tunde Ednut

Now an Instagram blogger, many often forget that Ednut once made a hit song “Catching Cold” which he collaborated with Dr. Sid. Since the song made a hit, he dropped other songs such as ‘Buga Won’, ‘My Kinda Song’, ‘Buga Won Reloaded’, ‘Baby Boo’ and ‘Jingle Bell’ but all failed to fly.

Kelly Handsome

He was one of the leading artistes in Nigeria with his song “Maga Don Pay” which ruled the airwaves. But the singer is yet to drop another banging hit of such and the only reason many heard of him was during the drama involving his baby mama on social media. 

The singer had also in an interview stated that he no longer lived in Nigeria “I live in the United States of America; I only come to Nigeria when I have things to do. I have other things I do with my life now but I don’t like to reveal details. I have a family and I have a daughter to take care of.
