Open defecation: FCT inaugurates vanguard to combat menace

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through the office of the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council has flagged off a vanguard aimed at tackling the menace of open defecation in the council.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday with the theme "Say no to open defecation", the AMAC chairman Christopher Maikalangu said, the vanguard will work with traditional rulers and other relevant stakeholders to make sure that they reduce open defecation to the barest minimum in the Council.

He said: "This initiative is geared towards educating, sensitizing and mobilizing our communities against open defecation and proper waste management.

"These women selected from the 12 political wards of the Council will work with the traditional rulers and other relevant stakeholders to make sure that they reduce open defecation to the barest minimum in the Council.

"You will agree with me that AMAC constitutes 65% of the FCT population due to the influx of people into the Council on a daily basis thereby making us generate a heavy load of waste within our communities and cause our facilities to be overstretched.

"Unfortunately, most of our villagers do not have toilets and some of them are not making use of the existing public toilets.

"We have been embarking on a sensitization campaign on the values of a clean environment and the dangers of communicable diseases that come from a dirty environment."
