Open governance: Yobe ranks first in local government transp

The Yobe State in Northeast, Nigeria, has been ranked 1st position in local government transparency among other states in the 2023 Transparency and Integrity Index.

The transparency index was released by the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Integrity Watch (CeFTIW) in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation.

The state also ranked 19 among the 36 states of the federation in the fiscal transparency index.

According to the Center, the Index is aimed at promoting transparency, monitoring public sector expenditure and strengthening the integrity mechanisms of public institutions.

Yusuf Ali, the Senior Special Assistant on Communications and Strategy to Governor Mai Mala Buni, made this known in a statement on Friday morning.

According to Ali, the Centre used data available from official websites of state governments and federal MDAs to establish the extent of institutions' disclosure of vital information relating to good governance within the public domain using 5 variables.

He said the variables included Website Integrity, Fiscal Transparency, Open Procurement, Anti-Corruption, Human Resources and Inclusion, Citizens Engagement, and Local Government Transparency.

"As indicated in the rating of the 36 states of the Federation, Yobe State is ranked 19th in Fiscal Transparency with a 45.27 score, 1st in Local Government Transparency with a 61.07 score, 3rd in Citizens Engagement with a 66.67 score, 7th in Procurement with 75.00 score and 6th in Website Integrity with 58.33 scores.

"This transparency translates into accountability, probity and service delivery to the people for the government to get value for public funds expended on programmes and projects.

"It is obvious that the reforms introduced in governance by the Buni administration are paying and yielding positive results for the development of the state.

"Governor Buni at a recent forum in Damaturu, dedicated the success recorded by his administration to the people for supporting government policies and programmes and to the civil servants for their resilience to push forward and consolidate government policies and programmes.

"The searchlight beamed on the fiscal status of the state, the analysis and ratings by this reputable independent non-governmental organization is further proof of the commitment of Governor Mai Mala Buni to run an open government.

"This will no doubt spur the state government to do more and improve for the betterment of the people," Ali said.
