OpenAI denies agreement with Elon Musk in lawsuit

OpenAI has strongly denied having any agreement with billionaire Elon Musk in a recent court filing in response to his lawsuit.

Musk filed the lawsuit, alleging that OpenAI violated its non-profit status and reneged on a founding agreement that required the company to release its AI technology to the public.

Rejecting Musk's claims as founded on "convoluted — often incoherent — factual premises," OpenAI called the founding agreement "a fiction" that Musk conjured up to take credit that he did not deserve for the company's success.

According to OpenAI's filing, if the matter moves on to discovery, documentation would show that Musk had previously approved of OpenAI's transformation into a for-profit company run by him.

The business claimed that Musk stopped supporting them after his suggestions were rejected.

This claim is consistent with an earlier blog post by OpenAI that revealed alleged emails that Musk and the company exchanged.

These emails show that Musk pushed for OpenAI to become a for-profit company, with him serving as both CEO and the company's major shareholder.

He even thought about tying OpenAI to Tesla to provide funding. In the end, though, the talks broke down, and Musk withdrew.

In their court filing, OpenAI described Musk's motivations as self-serving rather than altruistic.

It claimed that Musk is using the legal action to further his own business goals while disguising them as humanitarian endeavours.

The document emphasised Musk's founding of his own artificial intelligence company, xAI, with the goal of understanding "the true nature of the universe."

Notably, the billionaire declared xAI's intention to make its Grok chatbot open source not long after OpenAI published a blog post refuting Musk's assertions.

Although some have seen this as retaliation against OpenAI, this action may also encourage developers to provide input on how to improve xAI's technology.
