Ortom Appeals To Benue Varsity To Suspend Planned Strike

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter at Benue State University to call off their planned strike.

During a Thanksgiving Mass held in his honour at the BSU Good Shepherd Catholic Chaplaincy in Makurdi on Sunday, Ortom urged the union to consider alternative methods for resolving issues with the university's management and the state government.

“My appeal is that we find a middle ground on resolving issues and avoid the temptation of always embarking on strike,” the Governor stated.

Ortom emphasized his administration's commitment to prioritize the education of students in Benue, stating that it should not be taken lightly.

He also praised the university's management under the leadership of its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tor Iorapuu, for their work and congratulated the university on its 30th anniversary.

“I am happy you have been able to manage the University without any major issues,” Ortom said.

The Governor further mentioned that his administration had approved the university's takeover of the Makurdi Zoological Garden, JS Tarka Foundation, and the Agriculture Development Corporation for academic research and other purposes in a bid to aid its growth.

Governor Ortom expressed his gratitude to the Chaplain of the Good Shepherd Catholic Chaplaincy, Rev. Fr. Remigius Ihyula and the Christian community for holding a Thanksgiving Mass in his honour as he nears the end of his tenure in office.

He acknowledged that the prayers of the Church sustained his administration during difficult times.

He also praised the Catholic Church for its contributions to education, healthcare, and character development and emphasized that it has always stayed true to its mission.

Governor Ortom extended his condolences to the University community for the recent passing of a pioneer staff member, Prof. Armstrong Matiu Adejo, noting that the loss personally saddened him as Adejo was a friend and former teacher.

The Vice Chancellor of Benue State University, Prof. Tor Iorapuu, in his remarks praised the Governor for his unwavering support of the university

Iorapuu further commended Ortom for approving the university's takeover of the Makurdi Zoological Garden, JS Tarka Foundation and Agriculture Development Corporation, which will greatly benefit the university's research efforts.
