Osimhen Targets Africa's Best Player Award

Osimhen Targets Africa's Best Player Award

Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen has expressed his desire to become the African Footballer of the Year.

Although he has been tipped to win the award following a stellar season in the colours of Napoli, the Nigerian international told Daily Mail that it would be a dream come true to clinch the award.

The 24-year-old has 21 goals to his credit in 23 league appearances and is leading the charge for Napoli to win a first Scudetto in 33 years.

This is in addition to his four goals in five outings in the UEFA Champions League which helped Napoli reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in the club's history.

"I am not going to lie. It would be my dream to be African Footballer of the Year, said the Super Eagles forward.

"I was at the ceremony in 2015 when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won the award.

"As an African, you dream of this prize and maybe I can win."

Since former Arsenal forward Nwankwo Kanu took it home in 1999, no Nigerian footballer has won the award, though the likes of Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Vincent Enyeama and John Mikel Obi all came close to winning the prestigious accolade afterwards.
