Osinbajo Speaks On New Curriculum For Nigerian Varsities

The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has spoken on the new curriculum for Nigerian universities which was released on Monday.

AllNews Nigeria reports that the unveiling of the curriculum was part of the activities lined up for the 60th anniversary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Speaking during the unveiling, Osinbajo said the new curriculum was part of the efforts aimed at making university education meet pressing issues of the Nigerian society.

The Vice President who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha stated that the Core Curriculum and Minimum Standard would improve the level of scholarships in Nigerian universities while also levelling up to international standards.

Osinbajo lauded the NUC for retaining the core of Agriculture and for including three courses; Allied Health Sciences, Architecture and Communication, and media studies in Nigerian universities.

“This document has indeed taken cognizance of the need to provide greater academic autonomy to universities with regards to the development of some percentage of course content.

“I commend the commission of this decision to share the minimum credit unit required for graduation in the Nigerian university in the ratio of 70 to 30 per cent. This will further create institutional peculiarity,” he said.

Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, who also spoke at the event, noted that the restructuring of the Benchmark for Minimum Academic Standards BMAS commenced in 2018, and is proceeded by the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
