Osinbajo Unveils Omeife, Africa’s First Humanoid

Omeife, Africa’s first humanoid

Omeife, Africa's first humanoid, was unveiled by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday in Abuja in order to advance technological advancement in Nigeria and across the continent through artificial intelligence (AI).

Osinbajo was represented by Prof. Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, who in turn was represented by Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Omeife, the first humanoid robot made in Africa, was created by the Uniccon Group.

Omeife uses AI and computer vision to have features that are similar to those of humans, including language proficiency, movement, navigation, and behavioural intelligence.

“We are living in an exciting time of advanced technological advancement, where the science fictions of yesterday are becoming the reality in products and services of today,” he said.

Osinbajo stated that the Federal Government was in charge of ensuring the project's success and he invited all parties to work together to support it and create new projects.

Since humans made Omeife and other robots, he allayed concerns that technology or artificial intelligence will replace human jobs and cause people to lose their jobs.

Chucks Ekwueme, CEO of the Uniccon Group of Companies, noted during the occasion that Africa had received recognition for its contribution to the global ICT ecosystem.

English, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, French, Arabic, Kiswahili, Pidgin, Wazobia, and Afrikaans are among the eight languages Omeife is able to speak, according to Ekwueme.

He said that the six-foot-tall female African humanoid is a multifunctional assistance robot that offers language as a service to businesses that need to include native African audiences.

“We are happy to play a part in helping businesses and people all over Africa to achieve their fullest potential by providing access to the most innovative technologies for efficiency.

“It identifies and tags humans through the face and facial expressions, paying attention to a specific item when required.

“It identifies objects, knows their characteristics and also calculates positions and distances of objects it sees,” he said.
