Osun 2022: Amotekun Corps Has No Election Security Role – YIAGA Africa

Osun 2022: Amotekun Corps Has No Election Security Role –

It has been reported that the Osun Amotekun Corps is not part of the security architecture for the Osun gubernatorial election which will hold on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

This was made known by YIAGA Africa, an election monitoring body during a pre-election media briefing in Osogbo on Thursday.

YIAGA Africa, which emphasised that Osun Amotekun Corps has no role in election security, added that the Nigerian Police is the lead security agency.

The election monitoring body also maintained that since Amotekun Corps is not a member of the election security committee, it would be wrong for it to participate in the election.

In the run-up to the Osun election, there have been concerns among the opposition political parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which sees the security outfit as an arm of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Also, in June 2022, there were pockets of violence with loss of lives in parts of Osogbo and Ijesa axis of the state.

The Osun Amotekun Corps was alleged to have participated in the intimidation of members of the opposition parties and also in the indiscriminate killing and arrests of individuals without proper investigation.

However, the Osun Amotekun Corps Field Commander, Amitolu Shittu has debunked all the allegations.
