The Osun State House of Assembly has passed into law the Osun State local government area creation and administration amendment Bill Number 5 of 2022 and the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) Bill 2021.
Also, the Bill to upgrade the state-owned College of Education, Ilesa to a full-fledged university had scaled through the first reading on the floor of the House.
While noting that the Osun State local government area creation and administration amendment Bill Number 5 of 2022 will give local government administration legal backing by ensuring that the Councils is being governed by democratically elected officials, the House Speaker, Timothy Owoeye, added that it will pave way for the autonomy of local government as the third tier of government in the country.Osun Assembly Speaker, Timothy Owoeye
“The amendment number five ( 5) would enable Presidential system of government as against the previous Parliamentary system that we have, as we are aware that the Councils are the closest to the people in the grassroots.
“I am sure that the passing into Law of Osun State Independent National Electoral Commission (OSIEC) bill 2022 would enable the Commission to operate independently and also function on the basis of its own rules and regulations.
“The OSIEC law is expected to guarantee peaceful, free and fair electoral process in the state going forward”.
The University of Ilesa, Osun State establishment Bill 2022 which scaled through the first reading will thus commence the process of upgrading the College of Education, Ilesa to a full-fledged University.
This is to enable the institution to compete favourably with other great citadels of learning in the world.
