Osun Assembly To Investigate State Debt Profile

The Osun State House of Assembly has set up a committee to look into the state's debt profile.

The Speaker of the State Parliament, Timothy Owoeye made the announcement on Wednesday at the plenary of the House of Assembly.

Owoeye noted that several publications have been made concerning the debt profile of the state which is uncalled for.

He observed that the State House of Assembly needed to set up the committee to investigate the state's debt profile.

"The House of Assembly will do thorough investigation of the figure and set up committee to look into alleged figure.

"It is necessary to do so, in other not to affect the foreign investors willing to establish investment in the state," he added.

He cited Section 129 of 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended which empowered the State House of Assembly to set up the investigation committee.

In their separate remarks, the lawmakers commended the leadership of the House for setting up committee to look into the debt profile of the state.

They noted that it is good for the sake of financial transparency.

The committee members include Gbenga Ogunkanmi Chairman House Committee on Public Account and Taiwo Adebayo Olodo Chairman House Committee on Finance and Appropriation as Co- Chairmen.

Others are Olalekan Olatunji, Festus Komolafe, Michael Adetoyi, Adrullai Adegbile, Lateef Jayeola, Babatunde Ibirogba and Kofoworola Babajide while the Clerk of the House, Simeon Amusan would serve as Secretary of the committee respectively.

The Speaker, Timothy Owoeye who is the Committee Chairman also declared that only the House of Assembly has the authority to clear air on state debt.

 He then tasked the committee to find out exalt debt profile of the state.

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke had on Thursday, December 15, 2022, in an address to the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers revealed that the state was indebted to the tune of N407.32 billion incurred by the administration of Adegboyega Oyetola.
