Osun Local Government Election Declared Null And Void By Cou

The Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, the State capital, has nullified the just concluded local government election conducted in Osun State.

The local government poll was conducted on Saturday, October 15, 2022, by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) under the Chairmanship of Segun Oladitan.

On Friday, Justice Ayo-Nathaniel Emmanuel of the Federal High Court Osogbo declared the local government election as illegal, null and void.

He also added that the election was not conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2022.

He also ordered the local government chairmen and councillors sworn in after the election to immediately vacate Local Government Secretariats and offices with immediate effect.

In the build-up to the election, the Osun Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed opposition to the exercise.

The party also called for the arrest of the OSIEC chairman for going ahead with the poll which it claimed was against the Electoral Act, 2022.

The Osun State House of Assembly also backed the local government election with the passing of the OSIEC Law 2022.
