Our COVID-19 Vaccine 100 Percent Effective On Teenagers — Pfizer

Our COVID-19 Vaccine 100 Percent Effective On Teenagers —

Pfizer-BioNTech has said that their coronavirus vaccine is 100 percent efficient in protecting teens aged 12 to 15 years of age from the virus.

The claim was made in a  statement released on Wednesday, detailing a concise report of the company's study of the safety and efficacy of their vaccine in the United States and elsewhere for use in those aged 16 and older.

TIME reports that the results have been highly anticipated as states, local leaders, and even parents are keen to send teens back to school. The study reportedly suggests a path towards a return to pre-COVID-19 learning conditions whereby students won't spread the disease in classrooms.

The trial consisted of 2,260 adolescents between the ages of 12 to 15 who were randomly assigned to get two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine or two doses of a placebo.

In the course of the study which commenced in early 2021, 18 teenagers developed COVID-19, all of them in the placebo group. It was discovered by the researchers that the levels of virus-combating antibodies generated by those getting the vaccine were considerably higher than levels among those receiving the placebo.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in the statement, "We share the urgency to expand the use of our vaccine to additional populations and are encouraged by the clinical trial data from adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15."

The researchers found no significant side effects from the vaccine among the teenagers, but they will continue to monitor them for long-term efficacy of the shot, as well as side effects for a period of two years.

The data will ultimately help to enhance the understanding of how the coronavirus affects children. So far, experts say children don't seem to be affected by the virus as badly as older adults, though shielding them from symptoms of the virus is critical.
