Per CTV News, Daunte Wright's family said he was shot by police before getting into his car and driving away. He crashed several blocks away and was pronounced dead later.

Wright's death sparked protests in Brooklyn Center in the early hours of Monday morning, added to the tension in Minneapolis over the trial of the first four police officers involved in the death of George Floyd.

Wright's identity or race wasn't immediately disclosed but some protesters who were present at the gathering waved flags and signs that read 'Black Lives Matter.' Also, on one street, written in multi-coloured chalk was the inscription: Justice for Duante Wright.

Speaking via a statement, the Brooklyn Center Police said officers had stopped an individual shortly before 2 am on Sunday after they determined that the driver had an outstanding warrant.
They reportedly tried to arrest him and he reentered the vehicle and drove away, prompting one of the officers to fire at the vehicle, hitting the driver. The vehicle went several blocks before striking another car.
According to the police, the County Medical Examiner's Office will release the person's name after a prelinminary autopsy and family notification. The crash also involved a female passenger who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Daunte's mother, Katie Wright was near the scene of the tragedy and begged for her son's body to be removed from the street, as reported by the Star Tribune.
She said her son had called her when the cops pulled him over and she heard scuffling before the call ended. When she called back, she was told by his girlfriend that her son had been shot.
Tim Walz, Minnesota Governor, stated in a tweet that he was praying for Wright's family "as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement."
