Nigerian Cyclist, Tawakalitu Yekeen Bags Gold Medal At Continental Championship

An Oyo-born cyclist, Tawakalitu Yekeen has won a gold medal at the just concluded 7th Edition of the African Continental Track Cycling Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

Tawakalitu, while speaking during her visit to the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Asiwaju Seun Fakorede, appreciated those who have contributed to her achievement. The sportswoman showered a special appreciation to her mother who she said has been her backbone and hero.

Fakorede appreciated Tawakalitu for representing the State well at the tournament and also thanked her coaches who were the powerhouse behind her success as she won two gold and one silver medal.

The commissioner noted that since the inception of the current administration, it has become a norm in Oyo State to recognize and celebrate its outstanding athletes publicly, to serve as motivation and inspiration to others.

“For you to have achieved so much in just one tournament, it shows that more achievements are waiting for you and I use this moment to assure Miss Tawakalitu Yekeen here and other youths that are making us proud in the field of sports and other areas in this State that we got your back.

“The present administration in Oyo State will not relent in supporting people that will bring sporting glories to the State, facilities are already being turned around to make training and preparations for athletes successful,” he assured.

He added that the administration would do the needful to provide basic amenities, welfare, and facilities for the promotion of sporting activities and the progress of youths in the State.
