Oyo Elections: Makinde Remains Gov. Despite Confusing Judgement

Oyo Elections: Makinde Remains Gov. Despite Confusing Judgem

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan, on Monday affirmed the victory of Mr Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Oyo State governorship election despite setting aside the tribunal judgment that did same.

The judgment has, however, generated a lot of confusion amongst Nigerians.

All Progressives Congress, APC and its candidate at the governorship elections, Adebayo Adelabu, had begged the court to nullify the election and declare Adelabu, the winner.

However, the lead judge of the four-man panel, Justice Yahaya, rather than dismiss the petitioner’s case or sack the incumbent governor, said if not for the time limit, they would have ordered a retrial.

Adeboye Shobanjo, counsel to the All Progressives People's Congress and Mr Adelabu expressed his views on the judgment.

“In totality, the appeal was allowed. But my lord said that because of effusion of time, that since the time for trial has lapsed at the tribunal, they cannot order for retrial of the case.”
