Alaafin of Oyo stool
The Oyomesi have shortlisted 10 candidates to contest for the position of Alaafin of Oyo in the state.
The traditional council in the historic town is called the Oyomesi.
The death of the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III made the stool of the Alaafin vacant.
Oba Adeyemi passed away at the age of 83 in April 2022.
A total of 119 princes had expressed interest in sitting on Alaafin's throne, but many were rejected by the Oyomesi.
Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin of Oyo's Director of Media and Publicity, revealed this information in a statement.
In a statement made available on Friday, Durojaiye said that the Oyomesi had finished interviewing candidates for the Alaafin stool.
According to him, a total of 65 contenders turned up for the interview.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yussuf Akinade Ayoola Layinka, Durojaiye claimed that only 10 candidates had met the requirements following the interview.
He stated that the Oyomesi would shortly convene to discuss the Ifa (oracle) consultation as the next step.
“Whoever emerges among the shortlisted aspirants will be the candidate and the next Alaafin of Oyo.
“The state government is not only aware but carried along in all our proceedings before, during and after the interview period. The state government is ably represented by the Chairperson of the Atiba Local Government and some officials of the council."
