Panel beater bags two-year jail term for unlawful gun posses

A 24-year-old panel beater, Bitrus Atu was sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Magistrates’ Court in Jos on Wednesday after being found guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and drug use.

The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, presided over the case and delivered the sentence following Atu’s guilty plea.

The magistrate declined to offer an option of a fine, emphasizing that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others considering similar crimes.

Inspector Ahmed Labaran, the prosecution counsel, informed the court that the case was brought to light on July 1 after a police patrol team, led by ASP Audu Ameh, reported the incident to the “A” Division Police Station.

Atu was also found publicly smoking a substance believed to be hemp, which is prohibited under the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
