Parliament Building Catches Fire In South Africa

A parliament building in Cape Town, South Africa erupted in a fire on Sunday.

The City Fire Services said large flames and smoke engulfed parts of the building before firefighters arrived at the building a few minutes after receiving calls for help.

The National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula confirmed the incident in a press conference that the National Assembly had caught fire. He added that the fire will not prevent the 'State of the Nation Address' slated for February.

According to Aljazeera, the fire initially started at the old Parliament building behind the National Assembly. The flames however spread to the current Parliament building.

According to News24, authorities have been investigating a possible faulty fire detection equipment. The country's president, Cyril Ramaphosa said someone has been taken in for questioning.

Ramaphosa was reported to have arrived at the site around 1:30 pm.
