PDP Crises: A Northerner Will Still Be Chairman If Ayu Resig

A FormerNational Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Emmanuel Agbo, says should his party's national chairman,  Iyorchia Ayu, willingly residn, another Northerner will automatically take his place.

The former scribe was making comments on the party's current internal crises on Arise TV on Tuesday.

According to Dr Agbo, subsequent to Ayu's resignation, his deputy, who happens to hail from the North East as hima would take his place.

Since the emergence of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate for the PDP in next year's election, a defeated aspirant in the primaries and  Gvernor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike and other party stakeholders have been calling for the resignation of the party's national Chairman.

Wike accused the party of violating the principles of equity, fairness and balance, demanding the resignation of Ayu for a southerner to become the party’s chairman.

But according to Dr. Agbo, “35 subsection 3 of the PDP constitution says that in the event of willful resignation, incapacitation or death of any officer, say, now the national chairman as the case is, the deputy national chairman from the zone in which he comes, takes over.

“If Ayu resigns today, the person to assume his office is Umar from the North East. And Umar is not only from the North, but he’s from the North East where our presidential candidate comes from.

He restated that there are constitutional impediments to call for Iyourchi Ayu's resignation.
