Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has apologised for his "stupid comments" made about former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard before the win over Aston Villa.
Guardiola had mocked Gerrard's infamous error that cost Liverpool to lose the Premier League to City in 2014 when addressing the numerous charges the English league levelled at his club and the possibility they could be stripped of their honours if the commission proves the allegations are true.
His exact words were: “I don’t know if we are responsible for Steven Gerrard slipping at Anfield. Was that our fault?”
However, in his press interview ahead of Wednesday's crucial match with Arsenal, he admitted that he is ashamed of himself for going overboard, recollecting how Gerrard lost his footing and Demba Ba scored in Chelsea's victory over Liverpool.
“They were stupid comments. He knows how I admire him, his career, what he has done for the country in which I’m living and working.
"I’m ashamed of myself. He doesn’t deserve it.
"I was defending my club but didn’t represent it well by using his name.”
