Perfect Winning Start For Djokovic In Australian Open Return

Perfect Winning Start For Djokovic In Australian Open Retur

Novak Djokovic got on to a perfect winning start as he beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets on his Australian Open return.

The former world No 1 sealed his victory with a 6-3 6-4 6-0 win over the Spaniard in the first round of the tournament

The atmosphere of Melbourne Park was buzzing as the nine-time champion received a hero's welcome at Rod Laver Arena following his vaccine-related deportation saga last year.

"Unbelievable atmosphere, thank you so much for staying," Djokovic said to the crowd.

"Thank you for giving me such a welcoming reception I could only dream of.

"I feel very happy that I'm back in Australia and back on this court. I couldn't ask for a better start to the tournament."

The 35-year-old Serb whose hamstring was heavily strapped allayed fears by dismantling the world No 75.

Djokovic's win in his first match at the tournament means that he has 35 straight wins in Melbourne.

He will play Bolivian Hugo Dellien or French qualifier Enzo Couacaud in the next round.
