Phone Review: Apple iPad Air (2020)

Phone Review: Apple iPad Air (2020)

Produced with the design and power of the iPad Pro, the 2020 iPad Air is combined with its support for all the best iPad accessories, while keeping the cost lower by removing the bells and whistles most users don't need. The phone has stereo speakers, a large display, and a USB Type-C port that both professionals and casual users may find this as the most well-rounded tablet to buy in 2020.

Design and Display

At first glance, the new iPad Air is attractive with its high premium, flat design, and lightness. It's 0.24 inches size has enough bezel around the display for comfortable handling. The phone's display at 10.9 inches is just a good size – 10.9 inches – not too small, yet not unwieldy. It's also quite a wide display, or tall in landscape, which is great for productivity, such as writing documents or desktop web browsing.

It's an IPS screen with a pixel resolution of 2360 x 1640, 264 pixels per inch. It's also a P3 wide colour display that has True Tone support, the latter being a feature that makes the screen adjust to your surroundings' lighting for a more natural look which can as well be disabled if need be. However, if you work with colours, you may not want to turn it off.

Also, the iPad Air has a laminated display, leaving no gap between the glass covering the display and the display itself. The phone screen is equipped with a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, along with an anti-reflective coating. Tablet users will find this device useful in sunlight or even in a well-lit room.

However, the Air doesn't have the super-smooth 120Hz refresh rate the iPad Pro has. The new iPad Air has a Touch ID embedded into its power button. It works fast and reliably.

Although the photos and videos of this device aren't the sharpest, the good lighting makes up for it, which makes the visuals satisfactory. The iPad Air has a single 12-megapixel camera on the back, which can shoot video at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second (FPS). It can also film slow-motion video at 1080p, 240 FPS.

Another feature available in the phone is continuous autofocus and video stabilization, although the latter is only available for 1080p and 720p video recordings. Next to the main camera is just a microphone. However, there's no flash, additional back cameras, or a LiDAR sensor.

The selfie camera is a 7-megapixel device that can record 1080p HD video at 60 FPS which is a more than adequate camera for Zoom calls and FaceTiming.

Watching Videos and Gaming

This phone gives you black borders above and below the videos or movies you're watching, but those won't be too large. Furthermore, the high-resolution content looks great because of its sharp screen, along with its good contrast and realistic colors.

The iPad Air 4 comes with 64GB of storage which is more than enough to fit a whole lot of large, graphically intensive games. These games when being played on the phone will run with ease, with noticeably faster loading times and in great stereo sound.

The speakers are four grills, two on each side of the iPad Air. Music is loud and clear, kicks are super punchy, and has good bass. The stereo separation on opposite sides of the tablet is also great.

Battery Life

According to Apple, the iPad Air 4 can last up to 10 hours of watching videos or surfing the web on a single charge. Hence, the 2020 iPad Air will last you well over a work or school day, with plenty of battery life to spare for watching a movie afterward. While minimal users can easily expect up to two days of usage before needing to charge it. Quite impressive. The phone comes with a meter-long USB Type‑C charging cable and a 20W charger, which is for faster charging.
