Plateau agency orders probe into second fire incident at IDPs hostel

Plateau agency orders probe into second fire incident at IDP

The Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (PLASEMA) has called for a comprehensive investigation into the recent fire outbreak at the IDPs hostel in Shailang, Shendam Local Government Area of the state.

PLASEMA made this known in a request in a letter addressed to the Nigerian Police Force, the state's Fire Service, and Shendam LGA.

The fire incident, which took place on February 16, occurred at the Presidential Committee for Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR) IDPs hostel.

The facility, constructed by PCFRR following the 2012 flood disaster affecting 24 states, sustained significant damage as a result of the fire outbreak.

It was the second time that the hostel was gutted by fire, as some parts of the hostel had a similar incident in 2018.

PLASEMA, in a statement by its Director of Administration, Chuwang Sha, said that the PCFRR was interested in knowing the cause of the recurring fire.

According to the letter, the PCFRR also wants the agencies to suggest ways to forestall future occurrences.

“The agency received a report of the fire outbreak at the Presidential Committee for Flood Relief and Rehabilitation IDPs hostel in Shailang, which occurred on Friday, February 16, 2024, around noon.

"It is in light of the above that the PCFRR requested that an investigation be carried out to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak and other relevant information.

“PLASEMA will receive the report and forward it to PCFRR in Abuja for further necessary action. While treating with dispatch, accept the assurances of our esteemed regards, please,” the letter reads.
