The next God of War game originally planned for release sometime in 2021 has been delayed to 2022 and will be released on both PS5 and PS4 to ensure that Santa Monica Studio delivers the amazing game that is desired.

Head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst confirmed the news in a post shared on the PlayStation blog, saying “we’ve made the decision to push that game out to next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game that we all want to play.”

The studio posted a tweet confirming the delay.

Hulst said that the team is tentatively planning on a holiday 2021 release of another big-budget game “Horizon Forbidden West”, but the team didn’t state release date. He says that the development of both Horizon and God of War has been “affected by access to performance capture and talent.”

While the news of God of War’s delay and uncertainty surrounding the release window of the next Horizon title might be disappointing, Hulst made a statement about avoiding crunch at its studios. “With these things, something’s gotta give. It cannot be the quality of our titles, and it surely won’t be the health of the wellbeing of our amazing team.”

Hulst continued by explaining how important it was that Sony did not abandon the more than 110 million PS4 owners, but he promised that it was still very important to have "showpieces for PS5."

"You can’t build a community of over 110 million PS4 owners and then just walk away from it, right? I think that’d be bad news for fans of PS4, and frankly not very good business," Hulst said. Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. And if PS4 owners want to play that game, then they can. If they want to go on and play the PS5 version, that game will be there for them.
