Pochettino rules out Ugochukwu for Tottenham Hotspur clash

Highlights where Madueke needs to improve his game

Nigeria-eligible midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu will not be in action Thursday night in the Premier League rescheduled game against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, according to a fitness update by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Former Tottenham Hotspur Pochettino, taking charge of his 400th game in England, disclosed  to the media that several injured players who are on the mend are back to light trainings but the game against Spurs comes too soon for the players affected.

"No good news because we cannot recover any players from the list but have added Thiago [Silva] and Disasi, they will not be available for the match," Pochettino, who was the Spurs coach on 2 May 2016 when his team had to pull a draw and consequently hand the league title to surprise champions, Leicester City.

Ugochukwu, who is a nephew to former Super Eagles defender, Onyekachi Apam, joins the list of players like Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Levi Colwill, Raheem Sterling and Robert Sanchez that have been ruled out.

France U-21 international, Ugochukwu, is in the France's provisional squad for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

On if he expects another Super Eagles eligible forward Noni Madueke to kick on for the rest of the season, Pochettino responded thus:

"Yes, of course. He is doing well. He scored against Aston Villa. He is improving a lot without the ball. The challenge for him is to improve without the ball, to be more connected in the defensive side. He can [do that]. I hope he can take advantage of the possibility to play more until the end of the season."

Chelsea are ninth on the Premier League table and could be in European football spots if they win against Tottenham Hotspur.
