The removal of sponsor's drink is now becoming somewhat of a pattern as it was just days ago when Juventus star and Portuguese skipper, Cristiano Ronaldo removed cocoa-cola drinks during a press conference at the same Championship.
The 5-time Balon d'Or winner shifted the bottles of Coca-Cola away from him during a press conference in Budapest on Monday in the prelude to Portugal’s Group F-game against Hungary.
Ronaldo 36, followed it by holding up a bottle of water before declaring in Portuguese: “Agua!”, appearing to encourage people to choose that instead.
According to Guardian, Coca-Cola’s share price dropped from $56.10 to $55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo’s gesture, a 1.6% dip. The market value of Coca-Cola went from $242bn to $238bn – a drop of $4bn.
Coca-Cola, one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, replied on Tuesday with a statement that said “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” with different “tastes and needs”.
Later in the week, On Wednesday, Pogba, a devout Muslim, was seen moving the beer bottle from the table directly in front of him during a post-match conference following France's opening victory over Germany on Tuesday night.
For Muslims, alcohol is 'haram' or forbidden, so the Manchester United star's removal of the bottle is likely to be due to his unwillingness to endorse the competition's sponsor.
We are yet to see a drop in Heineken's price or value but if these acts continue by these European stars then we might be looking at a large decline in subscription to taking of these beverages by footballers' fans.
