Police apprehend two thugs over killing of health worker at

Two suspects have been detained by the Niger State Police Command in connection with the death of Umar Mohammed, a health worker who was fatally stabbed by thugs during a wedding ceremony in the Gbeganu neighbourhood of Minna, the state capital.

It was learned that the incident happened in the vicinity last Friday, just minutes after the deceased entered the wedding location.

Witnesses at the wedding site claimed that more than ten thugs entered the area with potentially lethal weaponry.

According to the accounts, one of the thugs stabbed the health worker in the head with a dagger as he tried to flee the location.

In a statement issued in Minna, the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that Mohammed had chosen to attend the wedding ceremony as he was on his way back from work.

According to him, “On 17/5/2024 at about 2200hrs, it was reported at Kpakungu Division that there was a wedding ceremony at Gbeganu area, while some miscreants from the Area reportedly led by one Ukasha and others armed with dangerous weapons attacked a victim named Umar Mohammed 35yrs.”

According to the state police image maker, the victim had a severe head injury. He was sent to General Hospital Minna, where a doctor declared him dead after he passed away.

He disclosed, "The police patrol teams were dispatched to the scene and two suspects were arrested while others fled the scene."

Abiodun further mentioned that while the incident is being investigated, attempts are being made to capture the individuals who are escaping.

Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Police Command has arrested five thugs, popularly known as Shilla boys during a raid on criminal hideouts in Yola Market, Wuro Hausa and Damare areas in Yola town, Yola South Local Government Area of the State.

The suspects, arrested over the weekend were allegedly involved in robbing people of their belongings.

The command's spokesperson, Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday said those arrested were on the command's wanted list.

He said an investigation was ongoing and urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements in their surroundings.

The statement partly reads: "The Adamawa State Police Command has on the 11th and 12th May 2024, Carried out its routine operations targeted at some criminal hideouts and black spots around Yola Market, Wuro Hausa, and Damare areas in Yola town, Five (5) suspected Shilla Boys who have been robbing people of their belongings were arrested.

"Luckily, those arrested were on the wanted list of the Command for Shilla Gansterism. They are currently under investigation to ensure the law takes its course.

"The Command urges members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements around their neighbourhoods. If you see something, say something and the police will do something."
