The Edo state police command has refuted claims that Sowore Felix Olajide was targeted and killed.

The Edo State Police Spokesman, SP Kontongs Bello, said the deceased was killed by kidnappers during an operation on Saturday morning.

Bello made the announcement while addressing journalists on Sunday in Edo state.

He stated that in the past 24hours, the police and vigilante have been working hard to rescue the 5 kidnapped victims and bring the culprits to book.

He further stated that his announcement became a necessity as the rumour circulating was causing panic among residents of Edo state.

Bello stated that “Sowore was not one of the occupants of the bus in which five persons were kidnapped. He was just someone who ran into the incident. He was coming and met the situation on ground.

“Sowore was coming from Okada to Benin. He was just a victim. The kidnappers tried to stop him, but he refused to stop. They were shooting, the bullet hit his car and one of the bullets got him, and he died on the spot.”

While explaining further, he said the incident involved a commercial bus that broke down en route to Lagos on Saturday at 2 am.

“The occupants looked for somewhere to sleep and early in the morning, they came with the intention to pack their belongings from the bus, but unknown to them, the kidnappers have laid an ambush and immediately opened fire on the bus in an attempt to create fear in them."

He further stated that the police rescue team had rescued three of the occupants who hid in the bush after escaping, adding that they were brought to the station.

"Bush combing has started. The commissioner of police, Philip Ogbadu, has directed the tactical team to join the Divisional police headquarters at Okada and vigilante for the bush combing since yesterday to arrest the culprits and rescue the five victims."

Late Sowore Felix Olajide was a Pharmacy student at the Igbenedion University and younger brother to the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.
