An explosion, believed to be caused by dynamite, hit the secretariat of the Action People’s Party, APP in the GRA area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, early Monday morning.
The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., left the building severely damaged, with shattered windows, broken doors, and other destroyed property.
The attack comes amidst rumors that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, might be planning to defect to the APP with his supporters, following tensions with his predecessor and former political mentor, Nyesom Wike, who is said to have taken control of the state’s Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
It is gathered that the scene revealed extensive damage, including destroyed ceilings and fittings.
Party officials were seen assessing the situation and discussing the implications of the attack.
A party member, who wished to remain anonymous, described the incident as "politically-motivated."
He added, "This is clearly an attempt to destabilize our party, which is gaining momentum in the state. We urge the police to conduct a thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice."
The spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, when contacted by the Punch, stated that she was not yet aware of the incident but assured that she would look into it and provide further details.
