The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum has raised an alarm over the risk of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) joining terrorists due to poverty and dwindling resources.

The governor said if the problem is not addressed, the IDPs may end up joining Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Zulum said the state government can no longer continue to keep people in the IDP camps.

He disclosed this in Maiduguri while closing the Dalori-1 and 2, Gubio and Muna IDP camps.

He further reiterated his commitment to resettling all displaced persons back to their Communities.

“The only way to address the problems of insurgency is for the government to address the root cause which among others includes increasing poverty, infrastructure deficit and climate vulnerabilities.

“Therefore, what we need to do is to return the IDPs to their ancestral homes in a dignified manner.

"Nobody is forced to return to his ancestral home, we are here to support voluntary return in accordance with the Kampala Convention.

"People will be supported with means of livelihood so that they earned their means of livelihood by themselves otherwise our people shall continue to live in the IDP camps," the governor said.

Zulum further called on the federal government to support the IDPs to be independent on humanitarian support while assuring that he would resettle all displaced persons in their Communities before the expiration of his tenure.

He also commended the Chairman of the Victim Support Fund, General Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd) for supporting victims of the insurgency in the past 13 years.
