Premier League Expresses Disappointment Over 'Human Errors' Of VAR Officials

Premier League Expresses Disappointment Over 'Human Errors'

The Premier League has expressed disappointment over the costly "human errors" made by its own referees' in Saturday's English top flight fixtures.

Arsenal and Brighton were victims of shambolic decisions made by VAR officials who took charge of the video reins during their games against Brentford and Crystal Palace respectively.

While VAR Lee Mason failed to apply the lines which would have shown Christian Norgaard in an offside position before assisting Ivan Toney's equaliser at the Emirates, VAR John Brooks chalked off Pervis Estupinan's goal against Palace for offside which a review of the replay proved to be a wrong decision.

Consequently, the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) had to sanction both VAR officials after apologising to the Gunners and Seagulls.

Mason was barred by the PGMOL from VAR duty in this weekend's fixtures while Brooks was removed from Monday's Merseyside derby and Wednesday's crucial match between Arsenal and Manchester City, although Brooks has been cleared to return to duty as a fourth official for Aston Villa vs Arsenal on Saturday.

However, the Premier League made their feelings clear in a statement on Monday morning, saying: "The Premier League sets high standards and is disappointed that PGMOL fell below those expectations last weekend.

"As a result, the Premier League requested that PGMOL review and explain a number of incidents from the recent match round.

"Following discussions with PGMOL, and yesterday's Select Group One review meeting, we support PGMOL's views on addressing these issues to improve performances going forward."
